How Long Will I Bleed After a Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) Abortion?

In most cases, women experience light bleeding for two to three weeks after the surgery. However, some patients do not experience any bleeding and other patients have spotting or bleeding off and on.

Some women do not bleed at all and some may experience bleeding similar to menstruation after an MVA. Any amount of blood can be normal, except TOO MUCH (i.e. soaking four pads within two hours).

We advise that you use sanitary towels rather than tampons/menstrual cups as it is easier to monitor the amount of bleeding. [1]
